I'm not so sure it's so cut and dried to call it a rip off.
That whole Spumco routine has been copied and copied and copied so often that it's become part of standard animation language.
It's very easy to imagine a collection of young people doing what they think is cool animation when they are in fact referencing something they really don't properly comprehend.

As was said on the Cartoon Brew site, the Eco guys probably would've liked to have had Spumco do the ad, but they wanted the finished product sometime during *this* decade.

Gosh, somebody did a commercial using someone else's style (if not characters) to pay the bills?!?!?
